Helen Johnsen Christie (psychologist and trauma specialist) and Karl Eldar Evang spoke about psychiatric health among asylum seekers. Especially on the topic of trauma. How does an un-treated trauma disorder play out?

What consequences does it have for patients with this type of disorder to live in an unresolved situation without access to proper health care? About how traumatized people are disempowered by Norwegian authorities (UDI, UNE) after giving unaccurate information in their first asylum interviews. About the challenges in treating patients with trauma after torture and other dramatic life events.

Hjørdis Kurås presented her own work with unaccompanied under-aged asylum seekers. She spoke about the importance of learning, creative expression and contact with the outside world. Strong tales about the human costs of living in an asylum seeker reception center, being separated from close friends and receiving rejection letters that are impossible to understand.

Cecilia Dinardi starts working as an advisor at NOAS in June 2012. She read notes from a journal she wrote as a child living in an asylum seeker reception center. Presentation of why she is engaged in refugee politics and a talk about what she wants to work with in this field in the time to come.

Barn på flukt / Traumer hos flyktninger

15. april 2012: Helen Johnsen Christie (psykolog og traumespesialist) og Karl Eldar Evang snakket om psykisk helse blant asylsøkere med særlig fokus på traumer. Hvordan arter en ubehandlet traumelidelse seg?

Hvilke konsekvenser har det for pasienter med denne typen lidelse å leve i en uavklart livssituasjon og uten tilgang på skikkelig helsehjelp? Om hvordan traumatiserte mennesker umyndiggjøres av utlendingsmyndighetene etter å ha gitt unøyaktige svar i første asylintervju. Og om utfordringene i å behandle pasienter med traumer etter tortur og andre dramatiske livshendelser.

Hjørdis Kurås ga en presentasjon av sitt arbeid med enslige mindreårige asylsøkere. Hun snakket om viktigheten av læring, kreativ utfoldelse og kontakt med omverdenen. Sterke fortellinger om de menneskelige omkostningene ved å leve i asylmottak, adskilles fra venner og motta uforståelige avslagsvedtak.

Cecilia Dinardi tiltrer som rådgiver i NOAS i juni 2012. Hun leste opp dagboknotater fra sin barndom i et norsk asylmottak. Presentasjon av hvorfor hun engasjerer seg i flyktningpolitikk og snakket om hva hun ønsker å arbeide videre med på dette feltet.

12. April 2012: Undocumented refugees from Palestine, Iran, Ethiopia and Afghanistan shared their experiences as asylum seekers in Norway. About expectations to meeting Norway, life in an asylum reception center far outside of civilization, criminalization and disempowerment, about fighting without hope and about their view on the politics governing their lives in Norway.

Lectures by Zufan Amare, Hashem Jafari, Babak Majed, Dana Mahmoud and Ashraf Khoffash.

Psychologist Karl Eldar Evang spoke about the situation of undocumented refugees as he sees it from his perspective. Evang has worked at Health Center for Undocumented Refugees for years. He has extensive knowledge about the conditions people are forced to live under and the human costs of this.

The presentation was followed by a conversation between the panel and the audience. A forceful meeting with the avant-garde of our time.

Hvordan ser Norge ut for en papirløs?

12. april 2012: Papirløse flyktninger fra Palestina, Iran, Etiopia og Afghanistan delte sine erfaringer som asylsøkere i Norge. Om forventninger, møtet med Norge, livet på asylmottak langt utenfor allfarvei, mistenkeliggjøring og umyndiggjøring, om å kjempe uten håp og om synet på den politikken som føres i Norge på dette området.

Psykolog Karl Eldar Evang fortalte om de papirløses situasjon slik han ser den fra sitt perspektiv. Evang har i flere år arbeidet på Helsesenter for papirløse. Han har inngående kjennskap til hvilke forhold folk tvinges til å leve under og hvilke menneskelige følger dette har.

Presentasjonen ble etterfulgt av en samtale mellom panelet og publikum. Et sterkt møte med vår tids avantgarde.
