This program reflects the activities of Atelier Populaire Oslo / Palestinerleir, an artist run collective workshop for production, discussion, research and activism related to the situation for ‘paperless’ and asylum seekers in Norway at Kunsthall Oslo during three weeks, 6th – 27th of April 2012.
Daily public lectures were given during the workshop and represents an archive of knowledge about the conditions for asylum seekers in Norway and about refugee politics. The lectures have been video documented and can be viewed on this site. Please refer to the DOCUMENTATION-VIDEOS section in the main menu.

– Fra Palestinerleiren ved Jakob kirke til Kunsthall Oslo.
Atelier Populaire Oslo / Palestinerleir inviterer flyktninger fra alle nasjoner, statsløse, papirløse og norske statsborgere til å gå sammen om en markering mot den rådende flyktningpolitikken i Norge. Vi vil også vise vår støtte til norgeshistoriens mest langvarige politiske demonstrasjon – Palestinerleiren ved Jakob kirke.
Palestinerleiren har fått beskjed av Oslo kommune om å ta ned leiren den 6. april, langfredag i påsken. Fra denne dagen er Palestinerleiren invitert inn som vertskap for Atelier Populaire Oslo / Palestinerleir – et kunstnerinitiativ for en ny flyktningpolitikk.

Atelier Populaire Oslo / Palestinerleir invites refugees from all nations, stateless, paperless and Norwegian citizens to join in a demonstration against the prevailing refugee policy in Norway. We also wish to show our support to the longest continuous political demonstration in Norwegian history, the Palestinian Camp by Jakob church.
The Palestinian Camp received orders from Oslo kommune to dismantle the camp on March 6, Long Friday at Easter. From this day the Palestinian Camp is invited in as hosts for Atelier Populaire Oslo / Palestinerleir. An artist initiative for a new refugee policy.

Vols spéciaux, or special flights, are the chartered flights used to deport the sans-papiers whose requests for asylum in Switzerland have been refused. Sometimes, after years spent on Swiss territory, these men must abandon not only their hopes of a better life, but friends and families as well. The deportation notice is sudden, its execution rapid and without appeal. In the Frambois detention centre, residents lie in wait of expulsion, despair and humiliation.
After La forteresse (Grand Prix RIDM 2008), on the conditions in which refugees are received, Fernand Melgar turns his gaze to the final step in a failed migration. With the delicacy that made his name, he conveys to us the unbearable tension, but also the gentle moments of humanity between inmates, and the guards sincerely concerned with their fate.

“To shoot an elephant” is an eye witness account from The Gaza Strip. December 27th, 2008, Operation Cast Lead. 21 days shooting elephants. Urgent, insomniac, dirty, shuddering images from the only foreigners who decided and managed to stay embedded inside Gaza strip ambulances, with Palestinian civilians.
After the viewing we will have the opportunity to talk with the members of the Palestinerleir about the film.

A new Palestinian Camp
Palestinerleiren trenger DINE ideer!
Palestinerleiren utenfor Kulturkirken Jakob har vært en politisk demonstrasjon i det offentlige rom. Leiren har huset 25 palestinske asylsøkere som er truet med FN-stridig tvangsretur til Gaza, Vestbredden og Palestinske flyktningleire i Libanon. Etter å ha eksistert i ett år, den lengste fredelige politiske demonstrasjon i Norge, ble leiren demontert fordi tillatelsen fra Oslo Kommune gikk ut den 6. april. Både Grünerløkka bydel og Kulturkirken Jakob ønsker leiren velkommen tilbake, men mangler foreløpig godkjennelse fra Byrådet i Oslo. For å overtale dem trenger vi din hjelp!
Arkitektkontoret Eriksen Skajaa ønsker i samarbeid med Palestinerleiren, Antirasistisk Senter, Atelier Populaire Oslo og Kunsthall Oslo innspill for hvordan Palestinerleiren kan gjenoppstå i ny og bedre form. Vi vil diskutere ideer om alt fra hva leiren kan bli til hva leiren skal kommunisere og dens konkrete utforming. Vi ønsker at den nye leiren skal åpne for en bredere debatt om norsk asylpolitikk og inviterer til en tverrfaglig samtale og workshop.

A new Palestinian Camp
The Palestinian refugee camp in Oslo needs YOUR ideas!
The Palestinian camp outside of Jakob Church of Culture has been a political protest in public space. It has been housing 25 Palestinian asylum seekers threatened by deportation to Gaza, West Bank and Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon, against UNs recommendations. The camp was dismantled after one year of demonstration, when the permission expired the 6th of April. Both Grünerløkkas district authorities and Jakob’s church are positive to the continuation of the camp, but have not yet got permission from the City Council. You can help us convincing them!
Eriksen Skajaa Arkitekter are, in cooperation with the Palestinian Camp, Antirasistisk Senter, Atelier Populaire Oslo and Kunsthall Oslo looking for input on how to recreate the camp in a new and better version. We want to collect ideas about everything from what it can become, to what it should communicate to the actual physical form. We want the new camp to be a place for a wider debate on the Norwegian asylum policy, and we therefore invite you to an interdisciplinary conversation and workshop

Mohamed Ganam will talk about the poor conditions at the reception centers for asylum seekers and the general frustrations of the residents living there. We will take the story of Lier ventemottak as an example for the conditions and the consequences of the ways the Norwegian authorities are greeting asylum seekers.
